CPU
Often times, CPUs, particularly across brands such as Intel and AMD are
not comparable. The CPU clock speed is a measure of how much
information a processor can calculate over a small period of time.
That is all it is. What it does not account for is how
efficiently it can calculate that information. Two processors
may be able to calculate the same amount of information over the same
period of time, but one might be able to do it more efficiently than the
other, and its efficiency is not reflected in the processor speed. For
this reason, AMD has modified its naming convention to referring to their
processors with 4 number digits such as AMD 1800 XP+ to reflect the fact
that it is comparable to other 1.8 Ghz systems. The Celeron,
Pentium, and Athlon processors each have their own method of calculating
and processing information.
The most reliable way to determine "true" processor speed is by looking at
benchmarks of the processor and comparing it against other processors you
are interested in. Under different applications (gaming, multimedia,
etc.) the processors will perform differently. You should select the
processor that matches your needs
