Study: Internet Use in US Homes Routine

According to a survey by Pew Internet and American Life Project study, 60% of the 2,000 respondents stated they use the Internet regularly.  Two thirds of them had been online for three or more years.  At least 80 percent of the Internet users questioned expect to find reliable information on news events, health care, and government information.  Nearly the same amount expect to find product information from business with a site.  The implications are clear:  the Internet will continue to play an integral role in our lives.  Consumers need to be proficient with using the Internet, and despite the economic slowdown, businesses should continue to streamline their operations (including information distribution) by taking advantage of the Internet.  Read the full story.

AT&T Wireless & DoCoMo to Launch 3G Network

3G is a third generation cellular service that is currently available in Japan and is set to be released in limited markets in the US in 2004.  Its advantages are high-speed Internet access and face-to-face video calling, but the batteries require frequent charges, and the handsets are relatively expensive.  If 3G becomes popular in the US,  wireless data transfer between cellular phones and other systems should become more popular.  Read the full story.

Cable Carriers & TV Makers Call Truce

Television makers and US Cable Operators reached an agreement on December 19 that would allow digital cable signals to be sent directly to television sets.  This agreement overcomes a major barrier in the transition to digital television.  Digital television has been slow to catch on in the US.  Congress has threatened with intervention to accelerate the switch, and the FCC has mandated that all large sets carry digital tuners in 2004.  Read the full story.

Sharp's 3D Monitors: Look! No Glasses!

Ever dreamed of walking down the Golden Gate Bridge without leaving your desk?  OK, maybe not, but by next year you may able to.  Sharp Electronics plans to sell notebooks and TFT monitors that provide this technology.  This technology will not be only limited to gaming, as several other companies are looking to employ this technology for modeling purposes.  While the user does not have to wear glasses, the technology does come with its limitations such as specified viewing distance.  Read the full story.

Lindows Hits Store Shelves

Lindows is a San Diego-based startup that is offering an easy-to-use version of Linux, an operating system that may rival Microsoft's Windows.  Linux has often been criticized because of its complicated interface, but Lindows has been trying to change that.  Lindows entered the spotlight when it was sued by Microsoft for copyright infringement.  Read the full story.
